When floor sawing is the right pathway

If the surface is horizontal and the cuts are straight, this is normally the method. A wheeled saw runs along a marked line with the blade set to a fixed depth, producing a clean, consistent cut that a handheld tool cannot match over distance.

It suits penetrations formed in a slab, trenches for services, sections of path or driveway being replaced, control and isolation cuts, and openings in an industrial floor. The trade-off is physical: the machine is substantial, it needs a route in, and it cannot finish tight into a wall or corner — which is where a handheld or ring-saw pass usually completes the job.

Describing a floor cut

Horizontal cutting is measured, not estimated by area. Six details cover most of it.

Total lineal metres
Add up every cut line, including the short returns at the ends. Pacing it out is fine — an approximate figure described as approximate is more useful than a confident guess.
Cut depth required
Full depth through the slab, or a partial depth to a set level. These are different jobs and change how many passes are needed.
Slab thickness
If it is known from drawings or an existing edge, say so. If not, that is normal and is established on site.
Surface and substrate
Reinforced slab, plain concrete, path, driveway, industrial floor or a suspended slab over occupied space.
Is the layout marked out
Cuts marked on the surface remove almost all ambiguity. If nothing is marked, describe the shape you need instead.
What happens to the cut section
Whether it is being lifted out, broken up or left in place, and who is doing that. Cutting and removal are separate scopes.

Then the access gate

Access decides which equipment can physically do the work, and it is the most common reason a straightforward-looking cut turns into a different method.

Can equipment reach the area?

A walk-behind saw needs a route wide enough to push it through, and level enough to get it there. Stairs, kerbs, tight gates and lifts all change the answer.

Is there room to run the cut?

A floor saw cuts along a line and needs a run-up and space to turn at each end. Cuts finishing hard into a wall or a corner usually need a second method.

Is the surface indoors or outdoors?

Indoors changes water containment, ventilation and how the area is isolated from everyone else using the building.

Where can water and slurry go?

Wet cutting produces slurry that has to be contained and removed. Drains, lifts, carpet, tenancies and neighbouring properties all constrain where it may run.

The cut itself is the simple part. These conditions decide how it is set up and how long the area is affected.

Water supply and slurry control Most diamond cutting is wet. Water has to get in and slurry has to be contained and removed. You or the site contact Whether there is a tap nearby, and where water may and may not run.
Dust and silica control Cutting and drilling concrete releases respirable crystalline silica, which is a regulated exposure in Queensland. Wet suppression or on-tool extraction is standard, and enclosed areas need more. Limits worth knowing before you call

What is not part of this

Public road and asphalt cutting, traffic management, breaking up and carting away the cut section, grinding, soft-cut control joints, service locating and structural approval are separate scopes and are not offered here. Cutting a suspended slab over an occupied space depends on decisions that sit with an engineer and the responsible builder.

A cut section still has weight and still has to be dealt with. Agreeing who lifts, breaks and removes it before the work is arranged avoids the most common misunderstanding on horizontal jobs.

What information affects the price?

The measurable scope: how much is being cut, how deep, through what material, how the equipment reaches the work, and how water, slurry and the cut section are managed.

Setup and access often matter as much as the cut itself. A short cut in a difficult position can involve more work than a longer cut in an open area.

Does concrete cutting include breaking up and removing the concrete?

No. Cutting separates the concrete; breaking it up, lifting it, carting it away and disposing of it are separate scopes and are not offered here.

Demolition, removal, grinding, scanning, wire sawing, asphalt and road cutting are all outside the scope of this website. Who removes a cut section is worth agreeing before work is arranged.

How is concrete dust controlled?

Cutting and drilling concrete can release respirable crystalline silica, which is why water suppression or on-tool extraction is used and why exposure is a regulated matter in Queensland.

The controls that apply to a specific job are decided by the party performing the work as part of its own job-specific risk assessment, not by a website.
