Concrete Cutting Cost Factors to Describe Before a Quote
The measurable job details that change a concrete cutting price — length, hole count, depth, reinforcement, access, containment and dependencies — with no invented rates.
Short answer: the price of a concrete cut is set by measurable scope, and almost none of that scope is visible from a search term. Two jobs described with the same three words — “cut concrete slab” — can differ by an order of magnitude once depth, reinforcement, access and containment are known.
That is why there are no prices on this website. A published figure that is not backed by real job data is a guess dressed as information, and it tends to be wrong in exactly the cases where it matters most. What follows is the causal breakdown instead: what changes the number, and why.
The measurements that do most of the work
Three numbers dominate almost every concrete cutting job.
How much. For sawing, this is total lineal metres across every cut line, including the short returns at the ends. For drilling, it is the number of holes and the diameter of each. Pacing a distance out and calling it approximate is genuinely useful; a confident figure that turns out to be half the real length is not.
How deep. Cut depth, or hole depth, or the thickness of the element being cut through. This is the number most often left out and the one most likely to change the method entirely. A 50 mm score cut and a full-depth cut through a 200 mm slab are different operations with the same length.
Through what. Plain concrete, reinforced concrete, blockwork, brick or a post-tensioned slab. Reinforcement is normal in structural elements and is not a problem in itself — but it changes consumable wear, cutting rate and, where post-tensioning is involved, what has to be confirmed before anything starts.
What surrounds the cut, which is often the larger factor
Here is the part that surprises people: a short cut in an awkward position frequently costs more than a longer cut in an open area. The cutting is quick. Everything around it is not.
Access. How equipment gets from the vehicle to the work. A walk-behind saw that can be pushed straight to the slab is one job; the same cut up a flight of stairs, through a house, or down a 700 mm side path is a different one, because the method changes to something that can physically get there. On multi-level sites, lift dimensions and booking windows often matter more than the cut.
Setup and pack-down. Time on site is not time cutting. Protection, containment, water supply, power, isolating the area and clearing it afterwards all take time regardless of how long the blade runs.
Orientation. Horizontal cutting is the most straightforward. Vertical cutting requires a track to be fixed to the face. Overhead drilling changes water management, support and the working platform. Same hole, different job.
Water and slurry. Most diamond cutting is wet. That water has to get to the blade and the slurry has to be contained and removed. Outdoors on a hardstand that is straightforward. Inside a finished building, above an occupied tenancy, or where nothing may reach a stormwater drain, it becomes a substantial part of the work.
Dust control. Cutting concrete releases respirable crystalline silica, and exposure to it is regulated in Queensland. Wet suppression or on-tool extraction is standard rather than optional, and in enclosed or occupied areas the controls are more involved.
Occupancy and work windows. Restricted hours do not just delay a job; they change how it is staged. A cut that could run continuously in an empty warehouse may have to be broken into segments in an operating building, with setup and pack-down each time.
The dependencies that sit outside the cutting scope
These are separate scopes. They are listed here because they affect the total cost of getting the outcome you want, and because assuming they are included is the most common misunderstanding.

Two scopes, described properly
Neither of these has a price attached, deliberately. They show what a described job looks like when the useful information is present.
A slab penetration in a ground-floor commercial tenancy. One hole, 150 mm diameter, through a 200 mm reinforced slab, drilled downwards. Below is a basement car park, accessible and empty. Vehicle can park within 20 m, level access through a roller door, tap available. Nothing known to run through the slab in that area; no drawings held. Work has to happen outside trading hours, which are 9 to 5.
A path replacement on a suburban block. Roughly 18 lineal metres of cutting to full depth through what appears to be about 100 mm of concrete, marked out on site. Side access is 780 mm at the narrowest point with two steps. Tap at the rear of the property. The neighbouring dwelling shares the boundary fence 1.5 m from the cut line. Owner is removing the broken concrete themselves.
Both descriptions take under a minute to say and let someone assess the job properly. Neither requires the caller to know anything they could not establish by standing in the space with a tape measure.
What a price actually depends on
A final price is prepared and confirmed by the provider who would carry out the work, once the scope is settled — and on many jobs that means after someone has looked at the site. That is not evasion: access, reinforcement and what sits behind a surface routinely differ from what could be described by phone.
